Go for VINTAGE

Fashion, beauty, newsletter .. una nuova sezione di Positano News, Amalfi and Sorrento online newspaper solo in inglese

Individual and unique styling is a huge trend – and VINTAGE is all the rage. It is about setting trends, standing out of the crowd, making a statement, showing eccentricity – and moving towards a “green” lifestyle by “recycling old stuff”!

A movement rather than a trend

For some people it is about economizing, for others it is about following a trend. In interior design, VINTAGE and RETRO came up big time some years ago. The trend-setters scoured flee- and antiques markets, charity shops and local auctions to get unique pieces of furniture and decorative objects. Just a few years back, the trend became so powerful – furniture producers picked it up and started to sell brand-new “vintage” looking pieces. The trend has become a movement going right through our everyday life – RETRO is chic!

Vintage fashion rocks

When Julia Roberts wore a vintage Valentino gown for her win at the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001 it was so unexpected and eccentric – no other actress could have got away with it but she ignited a trend which is going stronger season by season.

Fashion designers spend days in archives in order to get inspired for their collections. Trendy people track down second-hand shops and charity shops, or spend hours in lofts and cellars of their parents and grand-parents to find vintage clothes and accessories.

Get an eye for it

Sometimes it is only just a question of a different mind-set and suddenly you look at “old” things like handbags, costume jewellery, fur stoles, gloves and scarves in a new way. Some cleaning and sewing very often do the trick and a handbag from the 60s turns a simple Jeans-and-shirt-outfit into a stylish outfit with a twist – and it looks so beautifully effortless! It is not about masquerade and turning back time radically – it is about picking genuinely vintage pieces and match them with your favourites to your taste…

Big business

In big and fashion-focused cities like London and New York it has become a nightmare to pick-up bargains if you are looking for vintage clothes and accessories. Specialized shops sell to stylists and stars. Even on the Internet it has become trickier to buy vintage at sensible prices.

But beyond the well-known places, there are still tons of opportunities looming. Visit charity shops and second-hand stores in villages and small towns.

This is, by the way, something I do miss in Italy! Where are second-hand and charity shops in this region where all these beautiful and intriguing old pieces are waiting for canny buyers?

If you know them, let me have name and address and I’ll publish it here in this section!
